We easily thought of 15 women who made a statement on the red carpet, so we're sure we missed many other great outfits. Here are some of the most fashionable moments of 2012:
1. Leelee Sobieski
Sobieski proves that sleek looks can go very far. So much so, that we are featuring two of her looks. The white Jil Sander dress was worn to the Vanity Fair party at the Tribeca Film Festival. The red dress was during Paris Fashion Week, where she wore Dior.
2. Gwyneth Paltrow
When she showed up at the Oscars in her Tom Ford gown, the Internet could not stop praising her sleek white dress with matching cape. It was just the right dramatic flair that an event like the Oscar needs.
3. Michelle Obama
The cost of this J. Mendel outfit may have been controversial, but this look was everything the First Lady is about. It's sophisticated, fun and youthful.
4. Karolina Kurkova
It takes skill to wear shiny fabric from head to toe, but Karolina Kurkova, who was dressed in Rachel Zoe, accomplished it. The model veered a little into costume territory at the Met Gala, but this is exactly the place where you can get away with more unconventional choices. And had she not worn the turban, it would have been just another pretty dress. Instead, she took a chance and ended up with a dramatic, fashionable ensemble.
5. Nicole Kidman
Kidman gave us present-day Eliza Doolittle, of "My Fair Lady." It's a shorter, modern version of the gown that Audrey Hepburn wears in the film, and it's perfect for the occasion.
Rihanna dabbled in menswear and other trends, but her standout moments were both feminine. With her two looks she represented two sides of femininity. At the Grammys, she wore a sleek Armani dress that she helped co-design. It was a simple and sultry look. The dress for the MTV VMA's was more covered up. And she changed everything up with this look. She wore her hair short. The dress was white. And it was just a simple, elegant look.
While Rihanna stunned at the Grammys, she didn't steal the show. The person who was most talked about was Adele as the award show marked her return. And she didn't disappoint. She wore a sequined Armani gown. It was black, as is her M.O., but she undeniably killed it. She was slimmer and looked happy.
8. Diane Kruger
Diane Kruger wore stylish outfit after stylish outfit at the Cannes Film Festival, but her most jaw-dropping moment came in the form of a two-tone Dior Couture gown.
9. Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway wore a beautiful Valentino gown that had a touch of pink at the bottom. The lace bodice and the tulle skirt was fit for a fairytale wedding.
10. Keira Knightley
Keira Knightley wore a heavily embroidered Valentino gown, and the result was stunning. The base of the dress was nude, which may have washed her out and looked boring. But the lively, colorful flowers were the perfect addition.
11. Leigh Lezark
During NYFW, Leigh Lezark wore a printed, floor-length Zac Posen dress. It's a difficult dress to pull off both because of the white and bigger pattern. But Lezark effortlessly pulled it off.
12. Elle Fanning
This starlet may make some odd choices sometimes, but her fashionable eye is always on display. At the 2012 British Independent Film Awards, she wore the most ladylike Oscar de la Renta gown.
13. Kerry Washington
At the Emmy Awards, Kerry Washington wore a sparkly Vivienne Westwood number, and it was fairly simple. The best thing about this dress is that it isn't exactly silver. It has a bit of a rose tone, and it helps shake things up a bit.
14. Emma Stone
Emma Stone is always one to watch on the red carpet. And at the 2012 Met Gala, she went super frilly in a short, red Lanvin dress. It was a nice departure from the usual floor-length gowns, and it was just right for the young star.
15. Solange Knowles
Solange Knowles is known for her pattern mixing and risk taking, so it was a treat to see her in something that's just pretty. She wore a floral Dolce & Gabbana to the opening night of the American Ballet Theatre.
